What it takes?

What does it take to lead a healthy life style in regards to food? I have pondered this a lot lately. Weight watchers tells us we don't need to deprive ourselves of the food we love. However, as I read People magazine's stories about super successful weight loss, I realized these people have one thing in common which is the ability to say no to bad food like fast food and desert. I guess sometimes if you have the points, it's OK, but the most of the time it's best to say no. One of the women said that if you are going to eat the cake then you need to give something else up during the day, like bread. So I think that healthy eating is not total deprivation, but certainly I've got to put a halt to junk food on a regular basis.

The thing about this is that WW is a weight loss program that is realistic. Everyone knows that in order to lose weight we have to change what we are currently doing. No one wants to give up all the foods we love completely because that's not a realistic long term change. The plain facts about weight loss are calories in vs. calories out, so if we want to incorporate something into our day that we wouldn't ordinarily consider a "healthy" food or a "diet" food, we do have to give on something else. Otherwise, we're not changing what we were doing before and it doesn't work.

The mentality of a "diet" goes back to the days when we didn't know as much as we do now about nutrition and health. What we eat is, in fact, our "diet" but we're changing the way we think about the word "diet" in my opinion. WW teaches us how to eat healthfully in moderation. Although, I'm still working on the moderation part ;-)

People like to complain about how a healthy lifestyle doesn't work with their lives bla bla, but like you said, it's what it takes to lose weight. Either you do it and have success or you don't and you don't change anything. Simple, but absolutely true.
